Choose Accessible Text Colors

Choosing the right text color for a given background is critical for readability and compliance. This use case helps you find accessible text colors systematically.

    The Process

Enter your background color in the Contrast Checker. Test potential text colors until you find options that pass AA (4.5:1) or AAA (7:1). For dark backgrounds, lighter text colors are needed; for light backgrounds, darker text works best.

    Common Pitfalls

Avoid relying on pure black (#000000)—it can cause eye strain on white backgrounds. #1a1a1a or #222222 often provides better readability while still passing AAA. Similarly, avoid pure white on very dark backgrounds; #f0f0f0 is gentler.
